Master of Political Economy Taster Class: A Wealth Tax to Avoid Austerity
Interested in postgraduate study at Sydney? Join this masterclass for the Master of Political Economy and get a taste of what it's like to study at Sydney.

This masterclass will draw on Political Economy's key themes, theories and approaches to address the topic of a wealth tax to promote sustainability of national debt.

Australian pundits have suggested a wealth tax on high-wealth individuals to support the social safety net. To date, The Greens are the only party to articulate a formulation of a wealth tax: 6% on billionaires’ net wealth. Today, we look at another, more equitable, formulation – a tax on gross assets. This tax is rendered more powerful in garnering revenue for national governments by not allowing liabilities (particularly, debt) to be used to avoid the tax. We will work through the calculation for Australia. The approach is justified using post-Keynesian analysis, a school of economic thought which just one of many schools taught by the Department of Political Economy at the University of Sydney. By thinking outside the box of conventional thinking and methods, new ideas and solutions emerge for today’s challenges.

You will also have the opportunity to ask questions about studying the Master of Political Economy at Sydney.
