Master of Cultural Studies: Popular Feminisms in the 21st Century
This session is delivered by Dr Anthea Taylor and Professor Elspeth Probyn as part of the University of Sydney's Postgraduate Masterclass Series.

As a result of both new media and celebrity culture, feminism is more visible than ever before. From celebrities actively claiming a public affiliation with feminism, to online initiatives such as the #MeToo movement, feminism is now shaping public conversations around gender and sexuality in crucial ways. This lecture asks: what kinds of feminisms (and feminists) are being privileged over others? What are the political opportunities – and limitations – of celebrity and popular feminism? And how are audiences themselves coming to intervene in these ongoing public debates, especially via new media?

This masterclass delivers content from WMST6903 Gender, Media and Consumer Societies, a unit offered as part of the Master of Cultural Studies.
