‘Beginner’s Mind’ : A mindfulness course for students. 3-4pm Fridays
Beginner's mind refers to having an attitude of openness, acceptance, curiosity, and a lack of preconceptions when encountering an experience. It is one of the fundamental attitudes developed during mindfulness training.
This online guided meditation and mindfulness course will introduce you to simple mindfulness practices that are commonly used in programs based on Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. Such practices have been shown to reduce stress and improve general well-being in everyday life. Each meeting will start with a brief introduction, followed by a guided meditation and ending with a brief discussion.

The course was developed by Dr Marianna Szabó. She will co-facilitate the sessions with Dr Ehssan Sakhaee. Marianna is a Senior Lecturer from the School of Psychology, with more than 15 years’ experience practicing, teaching and researching mindfulness and other types of meditation. Ehssan is a Lecturer and Director UG Leadership Program, Dalyell Coordinator from the Faculty of Engineering and has been studying and practicing mindfulness for over 20 years and is still developing the practice!

No previous knowledge or experience is necessary. However, please note the following:

1/ This course is not offered as a treatment for mental health disorders. Individuals with a history of trauma or those with a diagnosed mental health disorder should not take part in a mindfulness course without close supervision and advice from their mental health professional.
2/ At the beginning, middle and end of this course we will ask you to complete a few short questionnaires. These were designed to assess whether taking part in this program is making a difference to your level of mindfulness and well-being, and to give you an opportunity for feedback. Completing these questionnaires are entirely voluntary and your data are confidential. The results will only be used by us to improve future development of this course.
